How to setup a computer
Introduction
Whether you've bought a new computer, upgraded or are moving it, this lesson will show you how to setup a computer. This lesson shows you how to layout a computer and connect all the peripherals to it.
Where to put the computer
The first step to setting up a computer is to decide where you want it. Having decided where you want the computer make sure there is sufficient room so that all the parts will fit where you want them. Also ensure you have a power source within reach of the computer, a power extension with multiple outputs is useful so you can fit all the plugs into one switch.
Do not overload a multi socket power extension. Ensure it is not covered to avoid fire hazards.
Avoid putting the computer opposite a window as the light will reflect on the screen.
Placement of your computer devices
Placement of the components depends on how much space you have and personnel preference. It is only important that you have each part within reach of the tower. Make sure the display is at a similar level to your eyes. And that it is within comfortable viewing distance. Do not site too close to the monitor, and get a comfortable computer chair that doesn't encourage a bad posture.
A typical layout would be something like the following:
Display Monitor
(Screen/LCD) in the centre of the table or to a corner.
Tower
Is placed under or on the table at either side. You can have the tower on top of the table if you like, but a noisy computer can be annoying.
Keyboard and Mouse
The Keyboard is placed in front of the screen, the Mouse at the side of the keyboard on a mouse mat.
Audio Speakers
Are placed on the appropriate side of the display. Usually indicating which side to put each speaker at.
Printers/Scanners
Can be placed on the table if there is space, otherwise it can be under the table or somewhere else nearby. Make sure if they are under the table they are easily accessible. Check the surface they are on is firm, as printers can be damaged on unstable surfaces.
Connecting devices to the computer
The final step is to connect each device to the computer. And connect any other necessary cables.
Connecting the cables to devices is relatively straightforward. Each cable is a certain shape, size or color to help make sure they are connected to the right place. If you haven’t already connected the cables to each separate part do so now. To do this get the cable look at the connector at the end and compare this to any ports on the computer. Some connectors will only connect one way due to their shape. Any cables that do not have a specific shape can connect anyway.
Connect the cables
You can connect each part in any order you like but it can be easier to start at the bottom of the tower and work your way up.
Usually in the following order, but can be different depending how the computer has been made.
- 1. Network cards/Modems
- 2. Sound card
- 3. Graphics card
- 4. USB devices
- 5. Printer/Scanner
- 6. Keyboard (Purple) and Mouse(Green)
- 7. Power
Finally connect the power lead to the tower before turning the mains power on. Make sure the switch on the back of the tower is set to ON (1).
Turn your computer on
That's it your computer should now be setup. However if you have missed something or connected something in the wrong place it will not harm the computer, and most computers will tell you if something isn't connected in the right place. When using the computer if a part is not functioning correctly, or isn't appearing in the operating system, check that it is connected correctly and that the power is switched on.
To turn the computer on press the power button at the front of the case.
